MATHS MOSAICS

Mosaics are a popular decorative art form dating back to Ancient Greece and Rome. Working individually and in groups, investigate the properties of geometric shapes and symmetrical patterns, design a two-colour geometric border pattern and make a small mosaic tile.

MATHS MESSAGES AND SIGNALS

Before the advent of the telephone and radio, a wide variety of methods were used to communicate over long distances. Examine the use of alpha-numeric signalling techniques with flags, torches and water clocks. Working in groups, use a Roman signalling system to encode, transmit and translate a message.

NUMBER CODES AND CIPHERS

From the Ancient Romans to the Second World War, people have devised methods of concealing and transmitting information. Investigate the use of alpha-numeric ciphers. Solve puzzles and create messages using various numerical code systems. Evaluate the importance of frequency and probability in code-breaking.
